GERD can lead to sinusitis?

A newly published paper suggests reflux causes sinusitis using the technique of Mendelian Randomisation (MR).

MR is a scientific method that uses genetic variations to explore causal relationships between risk factors and health outcomes. By using genes as natural experiments, MR helps determine if GERD genetically predisposes individuals to sinusitis, providing stronger evidence of causation than traditional observational studies.

The paper reports that GERD can lead to sinusitis by causing stomach acid to flow back into the throat and nasal passages. This irritates the mucous membranes, leading to inflammation and swelling, which can block sinus openings and result in sinusitis. GERD is more likely to cause sinusitis in children due to their narrower nasopharynx, making them more susceptible to blockage and infection. The paper highlights that GERD-related sinusitis can become chronic if not treated promptly.
