Respiratory Infections

Persistent aspiration of acid and other stomach contents into the lungs can cause infections. Sometimes patients known to have reflux will be prescribed repeated courses of antibiotics. “Bronchiectasis”, a specific chronic lung infection is also associated with reflux.

What causes respiratory infections?

Studies in the UK have found that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can increase the risk of respiratory infections. The mechanism behind this is attributed to gaseous stomach contents containing irritants 'refluxing' into the oesophagus and travelling into the throat and lungs. This irritation may weaken the body's natural defences in the airways, making them more susceptible to bacteria and viruses that cause infections.

How are respiratory infections diagnosed?

A respiratory infection is most often diagnosed by a respiratory consultant, who will refer the patient for blood tests and scans.

Reflux can mimic a respiratory infection because it can cause a chronic cough, chest tightness, and even a feeling of congestion. Reflux can also irritate and weaken your airways, making them more susceptible to infections in the first instance.

What are the treatments for respiratory infections?

Lifestyle changes, medication, and treating the underlying infection are the preferred approach for managing respiratory issues caused by reflux.
